Hélia Hotel is a popular hotel of the Danubius Hotel Group, built in the 1990s on the bank of the Danube, in the 13th district of Budapest. The hotel’s lobby was renovated in the second phase of the ongoing architectural refurbishment. The hotel also has a conference and wellness center that is open to the public and the hotel guests.

The hotel management wanted to make the lobby a public space that could host social events and business meetings, as well as the hotel’s restaurant. That’s how we came up with the idea of the Yellow Bistro & Bar, which matches the yellow color of the building’s façade.

We designed the remodel to fit the character of the existing building, and to create a harmonious and fresh space. We removed the unnecessary elements that had accumulated in the lobby over the years, and made the space more clear. We divided the 800 m2 hall - which has a huge glass wall with a view of the Danube - into smaller zones. Each zone has a different function and mood, but they all share a common architectural language. We replaced the traditional reception desk with smaller reception stands, to make a warmer and more friendly contact with the guests. We also made a seating area with a fireplace in the center of the space. This area became a cozy place for the guests to relax, with evening piano music. The lounge space is unique because it blurs the boundaries of different functions, and makes the whole lounge a lively and contemporary communal space.
